Overview: Tentative Alphabetical Plant List Near Towson Y

 This is not complete but emphasis on plants because of size or color might cause a "mommy what's that plant" question.  This first list is by common names while knowing latin names are useful.  There are some  brief notes about the plants under the seasonal activity and location.  This is a commitment before I find the landscape plan, just to see if they correspond.  I will try to resist editing.

If I had to pick a favorite it would be the large hickory on the north side.  The  muscle wood is appropriate for the Y site.  Many of the trees may be landscaping cultivars like the honey locusts.

This is a very brief summary of observations for the mid-summer. 1. At the southeast corner, near the front entrance the large maple tree is growing seeds or "whirlybirds", technically samaras.  The crop may vary with seasonal stress, attempts to carry on the species.  One thought is their "flight" is to escape the shade of the parent tree.  These seeds are not very dry and do not fly very far. 2. The neighboring ash trees are producing the canoe paddle seeds. 3. At the base of the large maple,  porcelain berry vine, an invasive relative of grape, is beginning to form fruit.  This tend to project above the surrounding leaves.  We may try removing this. 4. What's Happening in December?

 Again this month there is little color around the campus.  The holly berries are still present, both gold and red.  We were assured that these are the friendly American hollies.  Remember there are the scattered  male hollies without berries but essential to the display. There was a question about evergreen and conifers.  Making the point that not all conifers are evergreen, we have larch, bald cypress, and dawn redwoods in the area that shed their needles. And not all evergreens are conifers as we see near the Y with the English ivy and the Hollies.  But the specific question was " is grass evergreen?"  Online I do not see any of the grasses among species listed as evergreen at least in this area.  Let's watch the grass over the winter. Meditations: Towson Y Nature and the Wider World

This space for speculations, second hand information , that might have importance beyond the specific plants.  Open for comments from those with more specific knowledge. 1. Lead, Lichen, and LOAD (late onset Alzheimer's Disease)  We showed the lichen photos at the Natural History Society.  An observer noted that these trees must have been grown in a more remote possible more southern area which would have been almost free of air pollution, specifically lead pollution.  The east coast has been a lichen desert for years mainly due to lead pollution.  The lichen is not specific to any one tree, and in general lives on the surface of the bark and not harmful. The same day the internet was observing a possible decrease in Alzheimers and proposing it may be due to the gradual drop in lead after phasing the additive out of gasoline.  Other investigators were looking at the lead Alzheimers association.
